英语中的metonymy（转喻/换喻）、antonomasia（代称/借喻）和synecdoche（提喻/举偶）大致相当于汉语的借代或转喻。它们的特点是都不说出事物的本来名称，而采用某种替代形式，以使语言更加生动活泼。这些修辞格一般都可以直接对译：

The kettle is boiling.

壶开了。

He must have been spoilt from the cradle.

他肯定自打还在摇篮的时候起就给惯坏了。

枪杆子里面出政权。

Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.

她整个少年时光都留在了运动场上。

She spent all her girlhood on the sports ground.

他们纷纷投笔从戎，奔赴前方。

They threw aside the writing brush and joined the army one after another and hurried to the front.

当然，由于英、汉两种语言毕竟还是各有各的表达习惯，所以有时候也应作适当变通：

Great minds think alike.

英雄所见略同。

The gray hair should be respected.

老年人应受到尊敬。

龙生龙，凤生凤，老鼠生儿会打洞。

Like begets like.
