IV.译文在直译的基础上将俗语与具体语境相联系。

1)贾蓉原是个明白人，听如此一说，便笑道：“我还有个主意，‘来是是非人，去是是非者’，这事还得我了才好。如今我竟去问张华个主意，......”（第六十八回）

杨译：

He said with a smile，“Well，I have another plan. Since I caused the trouble it’s up to me to fix it.I'll go and sound Zhang Hua out..."

霍译：

‘I've got another idea，'he said,‘Perhaps I should be the one to clear this mess up after all，since I am the one who got us into it I shall ask Zhang Hua straight out what his intentions are...' 

V.成功的意译。

两个译木中出现了不少成功的意译，形神兼备，堪称俗语翻译中 创造性的典范：

1)兴儿道这就是俗语说的‘天下逃不过一个理字去，了。”（第六十五回）

杨译：

“As the proverb says，” he retorted，“everyone has to listen to reason.”

霍译：

‘Because Patience has reason on her side，'said Joker.‘It’s like the proverb says："Three men with a carrying-pole can't shift Reason from its place.”'

VI.以诗体形式译俗语。

1)秋桐便气的哭骂道：“理那起瞎俞的混咬舌根！我和他‘井水不犯河水’，怎么就冲了他！……”（第六十九回）

杨译：

Qiutong wept and stormed, “What's all this senseless talk from that blind rascal? I kept as clear of her as well water and river water. How could my horoscope clash with hers?... ”

霍译：

‘Who pays any attention* to what those beggarly swindlers tell you?’she said. ‘It’s all rubbish anyway. How can I have any influence on her? I have nothing to do with her.

I've naught to do with you 

Or you to do with me.

...'

VII.进行归化处理。

这种情况主要是针对偏重交际翻译（即所谓Communicative translation)、以忠实于读者和便于读者接受（即所谓reader-based) 为基本原则的霍译而言的。

1)无奈这些鬼判都不肯徇私，反叱咤秦钟道：“亏你还是读过书的人，岂不知俗语说的：‘阎王叫你三更死，谁敢留人到五更’。……” (第十六回）
