美式英语中，“井字键”读作“pound sign”或者“pound key”。有一种说法是“pound（磅）”来源拉丁语libra pondo，简写成lb以后很像“#”这个符号，所以就用“pound”来指代“#”。

但是“pound”在英式英语中是“英镑”的意思。所以为了避免混淆，英国和澳大利亚地区将“井字键”读作“hash”。
