在单词semiconductor (半导体）中含有一个比较常用的词缀semi-。semi-本是个拉丁前缀，意为half (半）。它最早出现在少数拉丁借词中；16世纪后成为英语的派生词缀，使用率较高。19世纪初开始，semi- 大量用于一些因特殊需要临时造的词 (noncewords)中。它主要与名词或形容词缀合，起修饰作用；与动词、副词缀合的情况较少。semi-在派生词中的含义除了 half 之外，还引伸出 partly (部分地），half a period of time or twice (每一半时间的，即一段时间中两次的）等意思。
