先看一遍：

The problem isn't so much making mistakes as the lengths to which we sometimes go to defend ourselves when we make them.

划分一下层次：

The problem（主） isn't（系）so much making mistakes（表）{as the lengths [to which we sometimes go to defend ourselves

难点其实在于这两个句型：

1）isn't so much...as...：与其说...不如说。

例如：Oceans don't so much divide the world as unite it.（与其说海洋分隔了世界，倒不如说海洋联结了世界各国。）

2）length 的原义是“长度”，这里表示“程度”。

原句中，the length to which we go to defend ourselves 是 the length +定语从句。

to which 引导这个定语从句，which 的先行词就是 the length，to which 在从句中做做状语，表示”达到这样的程度“。

完整地看一下原句：
