阴: yin: a philosophical term in ancient China, referring to the things or characters opposite to yang. The condition which appears as inert, internal, downward, cold, dim, material, inhibitive, and declining is attributive to yin. In TCM, it is widely used for explaining the physiological and pathological phenomena of the human body, and for directing the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases, for example, interior-syndromc, cold-syndromc, asthenia-syndrome are ascribed to yin.

需要说明的是，中医的基本概念目前已基本为国际医药界所了解，在一般翻译中音译即可（实际上这些概念的音译形式已在国际上得到普遍的接受）。只有在有关辞典及专题文章中，才可使用描述牲翻译。

中医上的其他一些用语（如疾病、治疔等方面）目前也都是采用描述性方法翻译的，如：

导便：moving the bowels by topical application of drugs.

偶方：prescription composed of medicines in even numbers.

痘疯眼：smallpox complicated by conjunctivitis.

蛔疳：infantile malnutrition caused by ascariasis.

喘家：patients suffering from frequent dyspnea.

清心: clearing away the heat-evil in the pericardium.

从以上各例不难看出，描述性翻译尽管也能揭示原文无等值物词的意义，但却有一个严重觖陷，即行文往往过于冗长，不经济。因此，尽管它是一些双语辞典在转达无等值物词汇意义时常用的手段，在实际交流中却有碍于信息的转达。要解决这一问题，译者不妨将音译法、仿造法与描述牲翻译结合起来使用。重要的是，首先要揭示出这些词语的语义。只有读者理解了其语义，才有可能接受其音译或仿造形式。

此外，我们还可以采用近似翻译（借助“类似物”进行翻译）来处理中医翻译中出现的一些“无等值物”概念或术语（例如用西医的内脏器官名称来翻译中医的脏腑名称，用西医的一些类似病名来翻译某些中医病名）。虽然这些“等值物”只是近似地转达了相应的中医术谣的意义，但由于西医语言中没有它们的确切等值物，所以是允许的，因为这些近似等值物在某种程度上指出了它们所标志的实物或现象的本质。

需要指出的是，在中医翻译中采用的“近似物”只是近似地转达了中医原有概念或术语的意义，所以不可避免地在某些情况下会对它们所标示的实物和现象的本质提供不完全正确的概念。所以在使用“近似物”翻译时，一定要注意在适当的地方加上一些必要的注解。
