帝日:藏象何如?岐伯日:心者，生之本，神之变[林校引全本“变”作“处”，按《五行大义》，引“变”作“处”]也;其华在面，其充在血脉，为阳中之太阳，通于夏气。肺者，气之本，魄之处也;其华在毛，其充在皮，为阳中之太阴[林校引《甲乙》、《太素》“太阴”作“少阴”]，通于秋气。肾者，主蛰，封藏之本，精之处也;其华在发，其充在骨，为阴中之少阴[林校引《甲乙》、《太素》“少阴”作“太阴”]，通于冬气。肝者，罢极之本，魂之居也;其华在爪，其充在筋，以生血气，其味酸，其色苍[滑本无“以生”十字]，此为阳中[林校本及《甲乙》、《太素》“阳中”并作“阴中”]之少阳，通于春气。脾胃大肠小肠三焦膀胱者[《五行大义)、《云笈七签》引并无“胃大肠小肠膀胱”九字]，仓廉之本，营之居也，名曰器，能化糟粕，转昧而入出者也;其华在唇四白，其充在肌，其味甘，其色黄[林校云:“其味甘，其色黄”六字当去]，此至阴之类，通于土气。凡十一藏取决于胆也(此句九字，疑为后人所增]。

Yellow Ermperor asked: "What are the outer appearances like when the viscera corresponding to heaven, earth, Yin and Yang?"

Qibo answered:"The heart is the base of life and the place where the wisdom and mind locate, its quintessence appears on the face, and its function is to fill the blood in the vessel. As the heart associates with the fire and is the Taiyang of Yang, so its energy communicates with summer.

"The lung is the base of a man's breath and the place where the inferior spirit of a man locates, its quintessence appears in the soft hair of the body, its function is to enrich the surface of the skin. As the lung associates with metal, it is the surface of the skin. As the lung associates with metal, it is the Shaoyin in Yang, and its energy communicates with the autumn energy.

"The kidney is the place where the true Yin and true Yang of a man hibernate, it is the base of hiding and the place for storing the refined energy, its quintessence appears on the hair, and its function is to enrich the marrow of bone. As the kidney associates with water, it is the Taiyin in Yin, and its energy communicates with winter.

"The liver is  the base of the four limbs, it is the plae where the soul lies, its quintessence appears on the nails, its function is to enrich the tendons. The liver is also the place for storing the blood, so it can generate the blood. The taste of liver is sour, and its colour is green. As liver associates with wood, it is the Shaoyang in Yin and it communicates with spring

"The spleen is the base of storing water and cereal, it is the place where the Ying energy generates. It is called the 'transfer and transform' which means it can discharge the dross of the food, that is, to transform the five tastes and take change of the absorption and the excretion. As the lips are the extention of the muscle, the spleen's quintessence appear on all sides of the lips, its function is to enrich the muscle. As the spleen associates with earth, it belongs to the extreme Yin, and its energy communicates with earth.

故人迎一盛，病在少阳，二盛病在太阳，三盛病在阳明，四盛已上为格阳。寸口一盛，病在厥阴，二盛病在少阴，三盛病在太阴，四盛已上为关阴。人迎与寸口俱盛四倍已上为关格，关格之脉赢(胡本、赵本、吴本、明抄本，周本“赢”并作“赢”，不能极于天地之精气，则死矣，

"When the Renying pulse (the pulse of the cervical arteries lateral to the thyroid cartilage, reflecting the condition of the stomach) becomes acute, one fold greater than the Cunkou pulse (along the radial artery proximal to the wrist), the disease is in the Shaoyang, when Renying pulse becomes acute two fold greater than Cunkou pulse, the disease is in the Taiyang, when the Renying pulse becomes acute three fold greater than the Cunkou pulse, the disease is in the Yangming, when the Renying pulse becomes acute more than four fold greater than the Cunkou pulse, it indicates that Yang is abundant to the utmost which can no more communicate with Yin, and in this case, it is called 'Yang being rejected'.

"When the Cunkou pulse is one fold greater then the Renying pulse, the disease is in the Jueyin, when the Cunkou pulse is two fold greater than the Renying pulse, the disease is in the Shaoyin, when the Cunkou pulse is three fold greater than the Renying pulse, the disease is in the Taiyin, when the Cunkou pulse is more than four fold greater than the Renying pulse, Yin is abundant to the utmost, and Yang energy can no more communicate with it, and in this case, it is called 'Yin being closed'.

"If the Renying pulse and the Cunkou pulse are four fold greater than their normal condition, it indicates both Yin and Yang are in utmost over-abundance to cause the severing of them which is called 'Guange' (fails in mutual supporting) The Guange pulse is so decline failing to communcate with the essence of heaven and earth. The patient with this pulse will

die."
