生气通天论篇 第三 On the Human Vital Energy Connecting with Nature

凡阴阳之要,阳密乃固[《太素》作“阴密阳固”],两者不和,若春无秋,若冬无夏,因而和之,是谓圣度。故阳强不能密,阴气乃绝,阴平阳秘,精神乃治,阴阳离决,精气乃绝。

"The essentials of the communication of Yin and Yang rest in the denseness of the Yin energy and the firmness of the Yang energy. If the Yin and Yang being inharmonious, it will like to have no autumn but has only spring, no summer but has only winter in a year. Under such circumstance, all living things on earth will not be able to exist and reproduce according to the law of birth, growth, developement, harvesting and storing in due seasons. Since only a sage can harmonize the Yin and Yang energies in a proper way, so it is considered to be the standing order of the sage.

"Therefore, if the Yang energy is too strong and loses its function of defending outside, the Yin essence will be let out due to the Yang's failure of guarding outside. When the Yin essence is consumed, it will soon die out.

"If the Yin and Yang energies of a man being kept in a state of equilibrium, his body will be strong and his spirit sound, if his Yin and Yang energies fail to communicate, his vital energy will be declined and finally exhausted.

因于露风,乃生寒热。是以春伤于风,邪气留连[“连”作“夏”,属下读,为“夏乃为洞泄”],乃为洞泄。夏伤于暑,秋为痃疟,秋伤于湿,上[《类说》引“上”作“冬”]逆而咳,发为痿厥。冬伤于寒,春必温[明抄本“温病”作“病温”]病。四时之气,更伤五藏。

"If one contracts a disease stemmed from the exposure to dew and wind, cold and heat will occur. As the dew is Yin-evil and the wind is Yang-evil, and as Yin-evil produces cold and Yang-evil produces heat, thus, the syndrome of cold and heat will occur.

"When the body is hurt by wind-evil in spring, and the disease comes on immediately, it is the exogenous disease, but if the disease does not comes on immediately but retains inside, it will become diarrhea with indigested food in summer.

"When one is hurt by summer-heat evil in summer, and the disease come on immediately, it is the summer-heat disease : If the disease does not come on immediately, but incubates inside, malaria will occur in autumn.

"When one is hurt by the wetness-evil which runs up adversely to evade the lung in autumn, if the wetness-evil breaks out internally, cough will occur in winter; if it breaks out externally, the tendons will be flaccid and weak to form muscular flaccidity and coldness of the extremities in winter.

"When the body is hurt by cold-evil in winter and the disease comes on immediately, it is the exogenous cold-evil disease. If the disease does not come on immediately and the coldevil incubates inside, the cold-evil will turn into seasonal febrile disease when the Yang energy ascends in spring.

"When the weathers of the four seasons are warm in spring, hot in summer, cool in autumn and cold in winter in their normal conditions, man will not get sick, If one or more of the weather conditions is particularly stressed to be abnormal, it will not only damage the activation of production, circulation and function of the vital energy, but also will damage the

five viscera of a man.

阴之所生,本在五味,阴之五宫,伤在五味。是故味过于酸,肝气以津,脾气乃绝。味过于咸,大骨气劳,短肌,心气抑。味过于甘,心气喘满,色黑,肾气不衡(《云笈七签》引“衡”作“卫”)。味过于苦,脾气不濡,胃气乃厚。味过于辛,筋脉沮弛,精神乃央。是故谨和五味,骨正筋柔,气血以流,腠理以密,如是则骨气以精。谨道如法,长有天命。

"The nourishments of the five viscera are stemmed from the five tastes (acrid, sweet, sour, bitter and salty which may be apprehended as tastes of food), but when the five tastes are taken excessively, they will damage the five viscera.

"The sour taste acts on the liver, if sour taste is taken excessively, it will make the liver to have too much body fluid whic will cause sthenia of liver-energy.  The sthenia of liver will restrict the spleen-earth and make the spleen energy vanishing.

"The salty taste acts on the kidney. As kidney determines the condition of the bone, and salty taste can soften the hardness and is superior to the blood, so when the salty taste is taken too much, it will damage the bone and the muscle.  If the kidney-water is abundant to override the heart-fire. the heart energy will be restrained.

"The sweet taste acts on the spleen. and the property of sweet taste is sluggish and greasy. If the sweet taste is excessively taken, dypsnea will happen. When the spleen is abnormal, it will restrict the kidney-water and cause it to become black (the colour of the kidney). When the kidney water is restricted, the kidney energy will be abnormal to become ill.

"The bitter taste acts on the heart, if the bitter taste is taken excessively, the heart will be hurt. When the heart fire is hurt, the spleen-earth will fail to be moistened (the fire fails to warm the earth). When the spleen is not moistened, it can no more do the transportation work for the stomach, thus, the dry-evil of the stomach will become abundant and the disease of the distension of the stomach energy will happen.

"The acrid taste acts on the lung, if the acrid taste is taken exessively, the lung energy will become abundant, and the abundant lung-metal will restrict the liver wood. As liver determines the condition of the tendons, when the liver is restricted, the tendons will become loose. Due to the acrid taste also has the function of dispersing, the excessive taking of acrid taste will consume the spirit as well.

"Therefore, if the five tastes are adjusted in a harmonious condition without taking them excessively, the whole body will obtain ample source of nourishment, and the tendons, bones, energies, blood and striae of skin will be kept in a strong and normal condition. Thus, the one who is good at adjusting the five tastes can live a long life."
