精气者，精则养神，柔则养筋。开阖不得，寒气从之，乃生大偻。陷脉为瘘，留连肉腠。俞气化薄，传为善畏，及为惊骇。营气不从，逆于肉(莫校本“肉”一作“内”)理，乃生痈肿。魄汗未尽，形弱而气烁、穴俞以闭，发为风疟。

"When the Yang energy is within one's body and brings its delicate function into play,it will nourish the vitality internally and soften the tendon externally".

"It is normal when the skin straie of a man opens in spring and close in winter. If it does not open when it should open and does not close when it should close, it will leave the opportunity for the cold-evil to invade. When the cold-evil penetrates deep and damages the Yang energy, he may contract hunchback. This is because of the damaged Yang energy can no more soften the tendons.

"When the cold-evil enters into one's channels, it will cause stagnation of the blood. When the cold-evil and blood accumulate and remain in the muscle straie for a long time, scrofula may be contracted.

"When the energy of the channel system is in debility, the cold-evil will invade the solid and hollow organs through the channels. As the solid organs take charge of the mental activities, so when invaded by the cold-evil, one's spirit will lost its quietness and occur the syndromes of timorousness (due to heart) and timidness (due to liver). This is because of the

damaged Yang energy can no more support the spirit.

"If the Yang energy flows reversely due to the invasion of the evil energy, the blood will stagnate in the striae of skin. The stagnation of blood will cause the accumulation of heat, as time passes it will suppurate and form a carbuncle.

"If one is attacked by the wind-cold evil when his sweat is not thoroughly perspired, his shu-points on the channels will be closed and cause the heat stagnated in it. When both the heat and cold attack simultaneously, wind-type malaria will happen.

故风者，百病之始也，清净则肉腠闭拒，虽有大风苛毒，弗之能害，此因时之序也。

"Therefore, wind is the main source of various diseases, But how can the wind-evil be resisted? The clue is to keep one's physique and spirit quiet and not being bothered by material concerns, that his Yang energy may be substantial and his striae of skin dense. When his striae of skin is dense, he will be able to resist the strong wind-evil and severe toxin. It is

important to adapt to the weather sequence to nurse one's physique and spirit, that is, to preserve health in accordance with the law of Yin and Yang.

“故病久则传化，上下不并，良医弗为。故阳[熊本“阳”下有“气”字]畜[(滑抄本“畜”作“蓄”)]积病死，而阳气当隔，隔者当泻，不亟正治，粗乃败之。故阳气者，一日而主外，平旦人[“人”下脱“阳”字，王注与《学医随笔》俱引有“阳”字]气生，日中而阳气隆，日西而阳气已虚。气门乃闭。是故暮而收拒，无扰筋骨，无见雾露，反此三时，形乃困薄。

"When a disease is protracted, the evil factors will be transmitted to interior and change will take place. When the condition is serious, the Yin and Yang energies will be unable to communicate with eachother, which will make even a good doctor can do nothing with it.

"Due to the inability of communcating between the Yin and Yang energies, the Yang energy will be accumulated, and the patient will be seized by fatal disease and die suddenly.

Under such circumstance, the patient should be treated with rapid purgation. If the treatment is delayed, the patient will die within a few days.

"The Yang energy determines the exterior in day time. The Yang energy of man begins to emerge in early morning, being prosperous at noon and become weak in the dusk, henceforth, the entrance of energy (the oppening of sweat gland) closes in the wake of it. This shows when one takes good care of his spirit and energy, he should not only keep in conformity with the growth and decline of Yin and Yang energies in a day. So in the dusk, one should restrain his Yang energy, should not fatigue his extremities by excessive working so as not to disturb the Yang energy, and not to contact mists and dews by staying outdoor so as to avoid the invasion of cold-wetness evil. If one fails to adapt the three different times of the day, fails to use his Yang energy in day time, but fatigues his Yang energy by night instead, his bodily health will be disturbed by the invasion of the evil factors."

岐伯曰:阴者，藏精而起亟[“起亟”，吴注本作“为守”]也;阳者，卫外而为固也，阴不胜其阳，则脉流薄疾，并[《素问病机宜保命集》引作“病”]乃狂。阳不胜其阴，则五藏气争[“争”疑系“静”之坏字，阳不胜阴，阴胜则静，阳及运行，郁滞为病，故九窍不通]，九窍不通。是以圣人陈阴阳，筋脉和同，骨髓坚固，气血皆从。如是则内外调和，邪不能害，耳目聪明，气立如故。

Qibo said:"Yin is to store the essence of life and the vital energy is watching inside, and Yang is to defend the periphery of the body and is guarding outside. If the Yang energy has some activities outside, Yin energy will correspond from inside. If the Yin energy is insufficient while the Yang energy is excessive to cause Yin inferior to Yang, the flow of channel energy will be forced to become faster and stronger, it may cause mania; if the Yin energy is excessive and the Yang energy is insufficient, causing the Yang inferior to Yin, the energy of the five viscera will be stagnated to form the obstruction of the nine orifices.

"However. the sages can arrange his Yin energy and Yang energy properly to each of its suitable state, keep the tendons and channles in a hormonious condition, make the bone and marrow substantial, and can keep the vital energy and blood each persues its own way. In this way. one may keep his internal and external condition of Yin and Yang energies in harmony, and his health will remain unharmed even when the evil factors invade, his eyes and ears will remain sharp, and moreover, he can frequently maintain his primordial energy firmly inside.

风客淫气，精乃亡，邪伤肝也。因而饱食，筋脉横解，肠避为痔。因而大饮，则气逆。因而强力，肾气乃伤，高骨乃坏。

"Owning to the wind associates with the liver (liver correspond to the wind and wood), when one is hurt by excessive wind-evil, the essence of life and blood will suffer severe damage. As blood is stored in the liver, the wind-evil will hurt the liver too.

"When eat one's fill, the stomach and intestine are full, the tendons will become loose. If the instestine store up with the undigested food usually, the tendons will be kept loose constantly, and it will cause bloody stool or hemorrhoid.

"When liquor is taken excessively, the lung-energy will run up reversely.

"When one gives way to his carnal desires, and practices sexual intercourse with difficulty, his kidney will be hurt to wither up the marrow and his lumbar vertebra will be damaged.
