英语中的反问是明知故问，无疑而问，其目的是突出某种思想和观点，以达到加强语气，加深读者印象的目的。
例1 You ask, what is our policy? A say it is to wage war by land, sea and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us，and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy.
要问我们的政策是什么？我的回答是:在海、陆、空作战，尽我们之所能，以上帝赐予我们的一切力量作战。我们的敌人是人类犯罪史上空前暴虐凶残的暴君，我们要和敌人决一死战，这就是我们的政策。
例2 The gods, they say, give breath, and they take it away. But the same could be said ---could it not?
人们都说老天爷把气赐予生灵，把气夺走。不过这话用在小小的逗号上，何尝不是如此？
例3 Do you ever have to ask?
这你还用问吗？
例 4 The quarrel is between our masters and us their women?
吵架是我们两家主仆男人们的事，与他们女人有何相干？
例 5 What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word, as I hate helll, all Montagues，and thee： Have at thee, coward!
什么！你拔出了剑，还说什么和平？我痛恨这两个字，就跟我恨地狱，痛恨所有蒙太古家的人和你一样。照剑，懦夫！
