在众多的不定代词中，all的用法较多，翻译的方法也较为复杂。总体上来说，all表示“全体，所有”的意思，在句子中可作主语、宾语、表语、定语和同位语。代替和修饰可数名词时，指两个以上的人或事物，也可代替和修饰不可数名词。
1. all后接可数名词和不可数名词的译法
all后接可数名词或不可数名词时通常作定语，可译为“所有的……都（均)”、 “一切……都”等。如：
* Practically, all of the heat energy received by the earth comes from the sun.
实际上.地球所得到的几乎全部的热能都来自于太阳。
* All of the plants or animals respire.
所有的动植物都呼吸。
2. all转译为副词
在许多含有all作定语的英语句子中，all并没有译为汉语的定语，而是转译为副词“都”、“均”等。如：
* Different kinds of petroleum are all mixtures of hydrocarbons.
各种石油产品都是烃混合物。
* All electrical switches for lighting and accessories are located at the right side of the pilot control wheel.
照明及附件的开关均在驾驶操纵手轮的右侧。
* All locknuts are provided with a supplementary lubricant.
自锁螺母均供给附加的润滑剂。
3. all作主语或宾语时的译法
当all在原文句子中作主语或宾语时，汉译时一般多采用还原法，将all翻译为所代替的名词。如：
* It is known to all that mathematics is the basis of all other sciences.
大家都知道，数学是所有其他科学的基础。
* In times past all were alive with volcanoes and earthquakes and, along with other bodies in our system, were cratered by meteorites.
在过去漫长的岁月里，这四颗行星上火山和地震活动频繁，和太阳系的其他天体一 样，形成很多陨石坑。（根据上下文.将不定代词all还原译为“这四颗行星”)
