英语动词和汉语动词一样，都用来表示动作或存在的状态，但英语动词的使用范围却大大超过汉语。英语一个句子中总少不了一个动词，句子的谓语总要由动词充当。而汉语—句子中却不一定非有动词不可、因为汉语句子的谓语除动词外，还可以直接用名词、形容词或词组（主谓词组、联合词组）来担任。因此，英译汉时可视具体情况把原文的某些动词减去不译。这样处理的译文往往准确有力，更符合汉语表达习惯。试看以下各例：

1. The 5in semi-active laser guided projectile underwent successful testing in 1980.

1980年，5英寸半主动激光制导炮弹试验成功。（减译underwent)

2. But , this results in a requirement for improved oil seals.

但是，这就需要对油封加以改进。（减译results）

3. Some substances，such as glass，rubber，and the like, offer a very high resistance.

某些物质（如玻璃、橡胶等）的电阻极高。（减译offer）

4. This chapter provides a brief review of applicable theory for computer.

本章简单回顾一下计算机的应用理论。（减译provides)

5. On December 15, 1970 Venera 7 made a soft landing on Venus.

一九七〇年十二月十五日，“金星七号”在金星上软着陆。 (减译made)

6. The Congress favored strongly a position supporting the adoption of a single common projectile for use by all three services.

(美国）国会曾极力主张三军采用单一的、通用的炮弹。（减译 favored）

7. Very little effect can be reached against missiles diving from high altitude at supersonic speed unless a direct hit is achieved. 

对付高空俯冲的超音速导弹时，除非直接命中，否则收效甚微。（减译achieved)

8. The Beta cell could provide mankind's first permanent cure for diabetes.

Beta细胞也许可以根治人类的糖尿病。（减译provide)

9. The melting point of a substance is the temperature at which the change of state from solid to liquid occurs.

物质的熔点就是从固态变为液态的温度。（减译occurs)

10. The base bleed unit is used to give an increased range of fire.

这种底部排气装置可用于增大射程。

至于连系动词be，become等，其减译情况（尤其是其后的表语为形容词或介词短语时)更是习空见惯。由于这类减译比较简单，这里不再举例。减译英语动词时，要慎重从事，要保证做到减词不减意
