科技英语中有一些句子从形式或结构上看是肯定的，但其内容却是否定的，有时否定的意义还相当强烈。这主要是由于这些句子中含有一些具有否定意义的词或词组所引起的。对这类形式肯定但内容否定的句子，翻译时一般均应采用反译处理，以充分体现出原意。这种情况的反译处理在翻译中较为常见，一般有以下几种情况。

(一）句中有表示否定意义的名词

这类名词有 absence、neglect、lack、few、loss、refusal、exclusion、failure ,等等。例如：

1. To a great extent the value placed on gold and silver is due to their lack of reactivity.

金银之所以有价值，在很大程度上是由于它们不易发生化学变化。

2. When water evaporates gradually，few of the molecules have enough energy to escape from the liquid.

水缓慢蒸发时，没有多少分子具有足以从水中逸出的能量。 

3. If spaceships were launched from space of from the moon, the absence of weight would permit the ships to be launched with great speed at reduced pressures.

太空或月球上无多大重力作用，宇宙飞船如果从那里发射，就可以在较小的压力下以巨大的速度发射出去。

（二）句中有含否定意义的动词或动词词组

这类动词或动词词组有 avoid、cease、defy、decline、deny、exclude 、fail、lack、loss、ignore、miss、overlook、refuse、keep from、prevent from、protect from 等等。例如：

4. In the choice of problems for research，it is obvious that we should select those that defy solution through already available techniques.

显然，在选择研究课题时，我们应当选择那些采用现有技术无法解决的问题。

5. The patient usually fails to take notice of the symptoms as in dicating the carcinoma of the breast. 

患者往往没有注意到乳腺癌的这些症状。

6. Different types of leucocytes defend our human bodies against being invaded by disease germs.

不同种类的白细胞保护人体不受病菌的侵袭。
