Dear friends,

Good evening! I'm delighted to have you all at our reception in celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Let me begin by extending my heart-felt thanks and sincere appreciations to all the friends who have the unfailing care and support of China's development, China-Australia and China-Tasmania friendship.

　　今天，我们欢聚一堂，共同庆祝中华人民共和国成立70周年华诞。过去70年是极不平凡的岁月，中国取得了历史上前所未有的辉煌成就。

　　70年来，中国已从建国初期一穷二白的农业国发展成为世界第二大世界经济体、第一大工业国、第一大货物贸易国，是近130个国家和地区的最大贸易伙伴和最大出口市场。2018年中国国内生产总值突破90万亿元大关，比新中国成立初期增长175倍。中国已成为世界经济增长主要引擎，近年对世界经济增长贡献率每年超过30%。中国的国际竞争力和创新能力大幅提升。在短短几十年时间里，中国近8亿人摆脱贫困，4亿多人跨入中等收入行列，到2020年中国将实现现有标准下全部脱贫，国家富强、民族振兴、人民幸福的梦想正逐渐变为现实。

Today, we gather here to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is fair to say that the past 70 years have been extremely phenomenal and extraordinary. Our nation has made tremendous achievements, hard-won and never seen before in history.

With 70 years of relentless efforts, the Chinese people have turned China from a poor and backward agricultural country into the world's second largest economy, the largest industrial manufacturer, and the largest trader in goods. Indeed, China has become the largest trading partner and largest export market of nearly 130 countries and regions. The GDP of China in 2018, reaching over US $13 trillion, is 175 times as many as that of New China 70 years ago.

China has become an important engine of the global economy, contributing about 30% of the world economic growth annually on average in recent years. Our global competitiveness and innovation capacity have increased significantly. In just a few decades, some 800 million people in China have been lifted out of poverty and a middle income population of over 400 million has been cultivated.

By 2020, all people living below the current poverty line will be taken out of poverty, the first time in our history. The aspirations for a prosperous and strong country, national rejuvenation and happiness of the Chinese people are becoming a reality.

　　经过70年的发展，今天的中国站在一个新的历史起点上。在以习近平同志为核心的党中央坚强领导下，中国特色社会主义进入新时代，近14亿中国人民正在中华民族伟大复兴的新征程上阔步前进。

After 70 years of development, China now stands at a historic new point. Under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with President Xi Jinping at its core, socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era. Nearly 1.4 billion Chinese people are striding forward on the new journey of great national rejuvenation.
